Mary,
May I ask the brand /luthier and the model of the lap dulcimer you are holding?
I am about to buy my first dulcimer, and must admit I know next to nothing about them. In Austin, my home now, Mcspadden lap Dulcimers are all you can find. Are they OK for a "starter instrument"? I currently play acoustic guitar, 5 string open back banjo, and ukulele.
Perhaps you might suggest other brands/luthiers to consider. I have heard some "chatter"
" about "Black Mountain" dulcimers, but again know nothing about them. except they are all hard wood and they look vey nice.
Anythig you might offer would be very helpful.
Thnaks, - Shannon

Hello Shannon,
The dulcimer in the pix is a Kurt Simmerman mahogany and Spanish cedar concert--but Kurt is deceased and his fine dulcimers are pretty much unavailable. My most recent dulcimer is one made by Paul Conrad of Timber Hill dulcimers. He is currently making me a second one--just because they are so lovely. I do have a Cherry and Spruce McSpadden and it has a lovely tone--it is the one I recorded "Sweet Bama " on --on my Girl With the Banjo Tattoo cd. It has an ebony fretboard and a built in pick up. I might be interested in selling it. :)
