David got 2nd place in the first annual Uncle Dave Macon days contest.
Back then we did not separate "old-time" from "bluegrass" banjo. There was just one banjo category. There was an unwritten rule that first place went to the best "old-time" player. So for a bluegrass picker to get second - that was he best he could do. David was the best bluegrass picker in the contest that year. In those days, David played a lot of melodic bluegrass and was really very good. David worked his way through graduate school teaching banjos lessons at the local Musc Shop.
Harry - the headstock seen laying on the stage by David's foot is my Gallagher. I was playing mandolin in the chair beside him for this tune.

I may have been competitive John the choices were more slender in the earlier years...then the talent showed up. I thought the full photo was in my photo file. I just posted it. Harry, the shot you see is a cropped photo John sent me years ago. The actual photo has John to my right on stage with a mandolin and the guitar on stage in front of his feet. I think that was the 1926 Gibson converted by Danny Ferrington. Used it a while and should have hung on to it. John and I sat out under the trees at that old court house discussing that evening a few years ago. It was fun for sure. David E.
