This old Scottish love song, based on William Douglas's poem in around 1700, was also the first performance attempt of Lotta Crabtree (1847 - 1923). Known now as the Shirley Temple of the 19th century, Lotta walked onto a school stage in San Francisco as a wee little girl under six years old. She burst into tears when trying to sing Annie Laurie and ran off stage. So, stage fright is certainly nothing new! She got over it and became a millionaire and successful Broadway performer, leaving her millions to charity in the 1920's.

I'd been working on the "Galax lick" I learned from Adam Hurt, then turned to a Brad Leftwich arrangement of Tommy Jarrel's Backstep Cindy, and finally figured out how to insert that little phrase into a TOTW, Granny Went to Meeting. Other people have different names for the Galax lick, but it's still a convenient way to identify a familiar pattern of fingering and timing.

The group I play with on Sundays--the Rough and Ready Fruit Jar Pickers--does a lot of songs that our band leader likes and he used to play pedal steel guitar. So here's Maiden's Prayer, Steel Guitar Rag, and Roly Poly (with some quiet vocals in honor of my new cello banjo arriving this week).

Bonaparte's Retreat inspired by Stephen Wade's new book
Kentucky fiddler William H. Stepp so impressed Allan and Elizabeth Lomax in their 1937 Library and Congress recording, that Mr. Lomax recommended the tune to Aaron Copland who subsequently used it in his famous hoe-down piece in the ballet "Rodeo." The story is well-told by Stephen Wade in his new book The Beautiful Music All Around Us. Mr. Stepp played it an breakneck speed, different from the more charming versions abounding in other old-time recordings, but it was also impressive enough to use in the famous commercial: Beef--It's What's for Dinner.

These two songs are mentioned in Bill Monroe's song "Uncle Penn." His uncle fiddled them at dances, so Monroe grew up hearing them and even accompanying him on guitar.

The first recording of Lee Hammon's Calloway as learned from Dwight Diller was on a Bart Reiter with a White Laydie tone ring. This one is on a simpler, lighter banjo with no tone ring for comparison sake.

This song is so pretty it's hard to imagine it's about a quarrel, but I think the landlady didn't want him to keep drinking her supply of ale, so he argues about it. At least that's what the biographic sources say.

In my continuing effort to study O'Carolan's works, I've found another gem of a melody, #171 in his notated songs from Donal O'Sullivan's biography Carolan,The Life, Times, and Music of an Irish Harper; and tabbed nicely in Ron Hughes O'Carolan for the 5 String Banjo book.

After posting a fast version of Dry and Dusty, here's a slowed up one on the little gourd banjo. The title insinuates struggles, perhaps relating to the Dust Bowl era, since the Morrison brothers most credited with this tune came from Arkansas.

Kit and I wrote this over the phone years ago. It sounds like a hornpipe. He wrote the A part and I wrote the B part. He always wondered how my part ended in a chord other than the tonic, but then the song goes back to his A part and ends right on the tonic note. Maybe my part was a bridge, not a B part. This goes to show how tabbing (or recording) something as you create it is wise. I tabbed it, but never really learned it until today, played on my Gold Tone Cripple Creek mini openback.

Though important historically as the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, the song is important to me as a useful lesson in learning melodic style. I used Tony Trischka's Melodic Banjo book.

Its lyrics were changed for a gold rush era play:
Down in the gold camp of old Rough and Ready
I fell in love with a gal with blue eyes.
Nighttime would find me in Susan's great kitchen
Drinking fine coffee and munching on pies. Etc.

A comparison recording with the fretless gourd banjo. The slides from the gourd transfer easily to the fretted neck of the openback.

A fun and challenging project--something I've left unfinished for a long time. The gourd banjo is showing me how to use more slides. I'm also recording it on an open back, both clawhammered.

O'Carolan's Fairy Queen is highly regarded by scholars of his work. To me its sound is more classical than Celtic. Irish folk have believed in fairies, the "good people," and O'Carolan's first composition, Shebeg Shemore, was about a battle between the little people of two hills.

This is my interpretation of Edden Hammond's fiddling. There's been much discussion on the Hangout about this tune and I wanted to find the oldest known source of it, though it's said it comes from his great-uncle Pete, born 1847. I like to think it's about the waterfalls of the James River, but the somber modal tone sounds more like it's about a historic event in Richmond, which would actually make the title "Fall of Richmond," as many also use.

A traditional Irish song about a man named Feilim who took his small boat and it crashed. It may have been an Ulster chieftain whose land had been taken. You can feel the admiration and sympathy in the music. The Irish have a great talent for such expression.

This Hammons Family tune is one of those captivating mountain melodies that make fiddle tunes a pleasure to hear. Played on a Bart Reiter Whyte Laydie in open G tuning, it would be capoed at the second fret to play with a fiddle.

Happy tune. The era of the gold rush had a huge effect on the U.S.A. We still feel the impact. My little ghost town of a community used to be quite large and the "miner forty-niner" was quite real. Being that Bill Monroe performed it, does that make it bluegrass? Or is it old-time?

In learning some tunes in the Cumberland Gap/Sandy River Belle tuning I wrote a little tune. It has a darkish sound so I named it after a neat place where big boulders form a little cave where the grandkids like to climb around. I checked later and realized I wrote it in the Aeolian mode in the key of G, played on a Mac Traynham Whyte Laydie openback.

John Salyer of Kentucky is credited most with this song. Pete Sutherland's slow version on "Banjo Gathering" inspired me to learn it, listening both to his 3-finger picking and the original fiddle recording of Salyer in 1940. Thus I'm playing it slow first, then fast; picking, then clawhammer.

Kenny Baker was a genius playing his fiddle. It's real hard on clawhammer banjo, but I can hear the melody and like to think of Bill Monroe listening to his fox hounds hunt on Jerusalem Ridge by his Kentucky home.

Listened to Bill Monroe and liked Kiss Me Waltz. He recorded some great instrumentals like this one during the early 70's. Over the Waterfall seems to go along with the theme and also stays in the ending chord of Kiss Me Waltz, which modulates from G to D.

This is the first part of an African slave song notated when Sir Hans Sloane was in Jamaica in 1668. It's quite a lovely tune and I thought putting it to clawhammer banjo was fitting. Sloane also drew the earliest known pictures of the gourd banjo, seen in many written reference materials.

Earl Collins learned this from his father, William. Earl was born in Missouri, moved to Oklahoma, and ended up in Southern California, where my guitar teacher hosted a jam where I remember getting to play as a new clawhammer player. Earl was kind and encouraging. He passed away soon not more than a year later.

This tune was composed for a funeral march after the Battle of Knockinoss in southern Ireland when the Irish and Scottish highlanders lost to the Parliamentary forces on Nov. 13, 1647. It honors the brave Scottish leader, Alisdair (Colkitto) MacAllistrum and his men.

This operatic song was learned before a trip to Italy when I didn't yet know I'd be staying in Lucca, the very town of Giacomo Puccini's birth. As it turned out, he also wrote Girl of the Golden West which was performed in San Francisco in 1907 and included the well-known mistrel Jake Wallace, who taught Lotta Crabtree how to play banjo. Small world.

For Don Borchelt's TOTW. It's a happy, meandering tune for having such a title, but I figure the sheep ranchers are dipping their sheep in sheep dip, thus the picture of working together and accomplishing the job.

O'Carolan had a sweet friendship with Bridget Cruise before he was blinded. Later he wrote four airs with her name as the title. He held her hand again one day for a fast moment while helping strangers board a boat he was about to leave. He recognized her hand!

By researching this song I've learned about the history of the Irish people. I've known the song since the 70's, but didn't know then I'd be living on the land of Irish immigrants. They came to California seeking to escape harsh conditions and ended up working hard in the mines and on farms, just like in my once-thriving community of Smartsville. For more information about this happy, hopeful tune see this week's Tune of the Week .

This one's for Jim Reed's pick-a-thon, played ever so slowly and delicately for an old sailor to dance a hornpipe, actually because it's all I can do. You've got to respect these pickers who whip out this song like it's a ship in full sail.

This is a West Virginian fiddler Edden Hammons tune. He probably learned it and didn't have the title, so gave it this unusual one. The title is found in similar lyrics in an 1850's shape-note book. He liked it so much he's heard to say, "Ain't that nice" at the end of the recording.

As I listened to this original song the first time the melody happily drove along just like the title suggests. But Jim's 3-finger picked melodic song is so incredibly intricate and skillful, I had to simplify it with this clawhammer version so I could enjoy playing it, too.

Coal Creek, Virginia fiddler Roscoe Parish (1897 - 1984) was visited and recorded in the 80's by Andy Cahan and Alice Gerrard. I found this tune in the Milliner-Koken American Fiddle Tunes Book and an MP3 of Alice performing it. Its melody is like a music box! As I'm researching Roscoe Parish right now; it's given me more insight into his music. This tune is related to Flying Indian and O Lassie, Art Thou Sleeping Yet?, indicating it has deep roots.

Learned from the playing of Jim Reed who says he learned it as a boy from his father. It's not like Stringbean's version, but when I first heard it I knew I wanted to learn Jim's way. Jim picks it, I clawhammer, and, as Jim tells in his interview with Paul Roberts, his dad played this clawhammer style, too, on a beautiful old Bacon banjo that Jim snuck and played.

Burnett and Rutherford played it as a dance tune called Ladies on a Steamboat. My mother once said that great tunes have a minor chord. This one has E minor. Does anyone agree with her? Ever since she told me that, I've found that my favorite tunes do have a minor.

This was Carolan's first composition at age 21, blinded since 18 years old, and embarking for the first time on his journey as an itinerant harper. The squire at his first stop suggested he compose a song about two neighboring hills where two fairy hosts had battled. Carolan's genius for writing was thus born.

This old West Virginia tune commemorates the place where Solomon Carpenter was born in the early 1790's under a rock ledge where his parents were hiding from Indians. His father, Jeremiah, later avenged the death of his brother Benjamin during the Indian raid. This version comes from West Virginians Burl Hammons and Dwight Diller. It's played on a small scale fretless gourd banjo made by BHO member Robert Browder.

Played on a fretless gourd banjo, this song reminds me of Lewis and Clark, whose expedition Kit and I are learning more about. The Corp of Discovery canoed up the Snake River till it joined with the Columbia River, where they finally came out on the Pacific Ocean. Per request, you'll hear 3 different banjos--2 resonators (Gibson RB250 and Deering Calico) and 1 open back (Bart Reiter Whyte Ladye). Can you tell? Which one do you like best?

John Hartford credits this to Samuel Bayard. I'm playing the small scale white oak fretless gourd made by Robert Crowder.

This is the better recording I made after playing around with the Zoom 4Hn recorder. The first post was the thumpy one whose sound wasn't optimal.

After hearing Jim Reed's Sound Off post I gave this old favorite a try. It has many chords and was a fun challenge to clawhammer. I never got tired of hearing Doc Watson do it with his sound effects and incredible guitar runs.

I've heard the first song, but didn't learn it until it was played at the end of a Thomas Hart Benton documentary. Salt Creek was the last picking song I learned as a novice picker who changed over to clawhammer, and then much later back to picking.

TOTW 4.5.13: And The Cat Came Back The Very Next Day.
The Cat Came Back is the Tune of the Week for April 5th, 2013. This one doesn't sound like the TOTW, though I've now learned that this folksong from my childhood does have older roots. The closest one I've heard seems to be Fiddlin' John Carson's recording in the 20's. My first graders here sing it for the first time.

This Tune of the Week is a bit hard in deciding what to do with that one note, so I choked it. Imagine losing a hog in the wild and trying to get him back to the pen. I guess a couple of good hound dogs could do the job.

Played by Doc Watson, this tune was popularized at the same name in Lenoir, North Carolina--not that far from Deep Gap where Doc lived. It's an interesting piece and makes quite a left hand banjo workout.

Known as the Singing Brakeman, Jimmie Rodgers (1897 - 1933) songs are fun to sing, but lyrically a bit sad. His yodel is famous!

After recording with a fretted banjo I tried my small scale fretless gourd, too. I find getting all the notes challenging and think of the fiddle's challenge with a very short scale compared to a banjo.

This original song by Owen 'Snake' Chapman is named after a mountain feature close to his home in Letcher County, Kentucky. He wrote many tunes and reminds me of Banjo Hangout's Jim Reed from Pike County, Kentucky who also wrote many tunes and played with Owen.

This song is the title on one of Kentucky fiddler J.P. Fraley's albums of the 70's, performed along with his wife, Annadeene. It's a different tune from a more common one of the same title.

A beautiful tune played by Bruce Molsky and Rayna Gellert. I'm comparing 3-finger picking to clawhammer in my other version.

I like how Pete Wernick did this in D. The lyrics can be pretty sad and his version caught some of that with a minor sound. The high G is tuned down to an F#, which sort of fits my unwritten rule about only changing the tune of one string for any given song. Not that re-tuning doesn't produce a great sound...

This is the last song in Dan's book Buzzard Banjo Clawhammer Style. It's in a modified double C tuning played on a Gold Tone cello banjo.
