My Instruments: Chuck Lee 11" custom -- walnut neck and rim, integral tone ring, Pegheds tuners, dogwood star inlay in headstock (new in 9/2008). 1980 Wildwood Troubadour, bought used in 1988. (In banjo terminology, does it's age make it pre-war?) Mountain style fretless made by Clifford Glenn of Sugar Grove, NC, bought in 1995. Bob Thornburg gourd banjo (#159), bought used from Chuck Lee, March, 2010. Thornburg tackhead grain measure banjo (#156), bought used from Chuck Lee, April 2010. Prust 13" trensioning banjo (new in January 2011). Terry Bell Boucher (mid-1840s style) replica kit: 28.5" scale, 13" rim, gut strings, fretless -- very pre-war. Pete Ross "Liberty" gourd banjo: four gut strings (3 long, one short), fretless, modeled after banjo in the 1792 painting "Liberty Displaying the Arts and Sciences."

I was playing around with fCFCD tuning. This fell right out of the instrument. Lee custom 11" walnut, no tone ring, Ren head, heavy Moon bridge, Non-knot tailpiece, no capo.

A fun work in progress on the Lee 11" walnut banjo. I read somewhere that this tune came along at the beginning of the transition from early minstrel style banjo to what we call clawhammer today. More info at: http://www.ibiblio.org/fiddlers/BONS_BOX.htm
I'm learning to sing it, too, but that is not ready for public consumption.
I'm also experimenting with a cut down, turned around clear plastic Dunlop finger pick on the middle finger which causes a little clattering as it (meaning me) touches strings it isn't supposed to. The pick may or not stay in my back of tricks, as it adds quite a bit of bulk to the finger and tends to get in the way. We'll see.

Jeff Long added his fiddle to Booth Shot Lincoln. This is another internet collaboration between me in Dallas, TX, and Jeff in Jackson, TN, and Fiddle Hangout (jefferylong). It's in G.

Tuned gCGCD, capo on 2 for key of D. Nice little sort of bluesy old time tune -- although when I played it at an old time jam, someone accused it of being a Bluegrass tune. Could be, I guess -- not that it really matters. Chuck Lee walnut banjo

An internet collaboration with Harlan Williams of Fiddle Hangout (harwilli55). I've added my just-acquired Bob Thornburg gourd banjo to Harlan's fiddle MP3. The gourd is tuned in open "D" (gDGBD down 2.5 tones). It's great fun to play, thumpy and mellow with a skin head, no frets, gut strings and violin friction tuners which are silky smooth and very easy to use. The gourd will be an addition to all my programs.

One of my favorites. Banjo tuned gDGCD, capo at 2nd fret for A model. A couple of bloopers here and there -- forgive me. Played on walnut 11" Chuck Lee with integral wood tone ring.

Original tune. It's great fun to challenge guitar players with it -- the "B" part changes chords on every beat. Wildwood Troubadour double-C tuning with capo on second fret.

Capo on 2nd fret for key of G. Neat tune that's fun to play (aren't they all, though). My playing seems to lag behind the beat a little. Does anyone else hear this, or is it just my imagination?

A work in progress as of today, but here it is, warts and all. Lee custom, 11-inch walnut rim, integral tone ring, capoed at second fret to put in the key of G.

I struck up an e-mail conversation with Jeffery Long of Fiddle Hangout and Jackson, TN, which resulted in Jeff adding his fiddle to my fCFCD version of Liza Jane. This is the result.

It's about 20 degrees outside in Dallas. A little banjo picking was in order. Here's Old Joe, stroke style, on my new 13" Prust fretless tuned dGDf#A with Nylgut strings.
The tune strays a little from the Briggs 1855 tutor as a result of my own additions, a few clinkers and some happy accidents. This is REAL pre-war stuff.

Another Internet collaboration with Jeff Long of Fiddle Hangout and Jackson, TN. This time, I added my banjo to his fiddle/guitar track. Banjo tuned gCGCD, capoed at 2nd fret for key of D. As it happens, I have an old yellow dog -- sometimes called a Carolina Dog. She's 13-years-old, blind, deaf and diabetic, but still hanging in there.
(Update: Sad to say that the yellow dog is no longer with us. All her old problems -- and some new ones -- caught up with her.)

This is a "different" version of Cindy. Not sure where I first heard it. I sometimes use it for a break when I'm singing the more familiar Cindy. Wildwood Troubadour, double-C with capo on second fret.

Capo on 2nd fret for key of "G". This one gets off to a bit of a shaky start, but seems to hang together after that. fCFCD is a terrific tuning for G tunes. Lee walnut banjo.
