I'm playing the Nate Calkins fretless tackhead #12 that arrived for review yesterday. It is a great Walnut necked grain measure pot banjo and has a wonderful sound and feel. Look for the review in July's Old Time Way. It'll be a good un!
This old Stephen Foster tune has had its parts reversed over the years but I play it as was originally set with verse before chorus.

I recorded this today (11/8/08) on my imac with Vega Deering Tub-a-phone using audacity (the program [;)] for this week's Tune of the Week. As you listen through, you will find that there are actually 2 versions combined in one. The more common one is first, but in the second, which I got from playing it with Bruce Molsky (historical reference on the way, it's not new to Bruce) you will notice the transition to a 4 chord halfway through the first measure and also at the START of the B part. Though it took me a while to reconcile it in my head, I find it a pretty cool variation. You are free or course, to play as you will. Just remember, if you want to play nice with others, you'll have to find common ground.

I recorded this today (11/8/08) on my imac with Hardesty fiddle # 85 using audacity (the program [;)] for this week's Tune of the Week. I start basic then add my variations. Choose how basic or fancy you want, but listen to the fiddle part to get a better idea of what you might play on the banjo to pair, counter or otherwise back up the fiddler.

Recorded this morning (Sunday the 5th) with Deering Good time tuned up to D. First two passes, basic bum ditty, second two, with basic drop thumb (bum pa dit ty, thump a thump a, did ty did ty - whatever). Kept it as basic as I could but used drop thumb instead always fifth string cause it does sound nicer that way. Hope this helps illustrate the difference. Hope I'm enough through the first cup o joe!
