I tinker with and build things. I have come up with a few good ideas ( rarley) and have more failures than any one I personally know. I built a few stainless steel banjo rims that I have put on two creations. My travel banjo has one (Tommy built the slot head neck) and the telejo I posted the pictures on. The steel banjo rim idea is not new: I saw one of the boston/beantown banjos and the farmer in me thought "I can do that" An afternoon at the junk yard salvaging some old walmart cooler parts, a cheap sears welder, a brake drum from a 68 mercurey and five of the rims were made. They project like a cannon, however, they sound a bit different than a wood rim. Not bad, or so I have been told, just different. They are consistant down the neck and ring like a bell. They seem to be in their element out doors, cause they are quite vocal. I think derring has a great idea with the boston line of banjos, I personally I think the derring may be better than the one's I made --- they gotta know more than I do. I love Derring banjos and if I could not get a Tommy George, COX or a nice OME/ODE or Pucha-- that would be my choice. That said (shameless plug) I have been playing the banjo over two years and have been blesssed living near one of the best banjo techs ever to grace the planet and a great teacher. Randle and Tommy you guys are the best. just in....I JUST GOT MY LONG AWAITED BANJO FROM TOMMY...WOW!!! God has blessed me beyond any thing I deserve.
