FMB Yeah!!!

From Moonpie50 on 4/11/2013 9:11:28 PM

Well finally I was able to play through foggy mountain breakdown today. Of course not at the speed that Murphy or Casey plays. But glad that I am able to do so just as well. I have worked through all the way up to John Hardy.  Getting purty stoked!!! I hope I can work John Hardy out soon too. Murphy Method rocks!

Glad to hear that you have learned FMB! Don't worry about speed, because (as Murphy says so often) that's not important.

FMB and John Hardy both have many banjo licks which you'll use later on, so work till you've got them!

Congrats Moonpie50!
Doesn't it feel great when you get through new a song for the first time? Fun & excitement!

I am close to the same point in my learning curve. I recently learned John Hardy, and I'm now tackling Old Joe Clark. I am finding Old Joe Clark MUCH easier than John Hardy, but everyone is probably different with each song.

The Murphy Method is the perfect thing for me. I can pop in the DVD whenever I get some free time, which usually happens to be very late or very early. In person lessons would not have fit my life. But Murphy is always there for me (and she never gets frustrated when I need to hear something 100 times before I "get" it).

I hope you are enjoying your journey as much as I am. Keep pickin'!

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I got a nice fire going in the fireplace today cause it got really cold in Ohio. So that I could practice my banjo and enjoy the warmth. I have been using a metronome at about 65 bpm. Yessss.... this is slow...but Murphy stresses that playing fast is not important. This enables me to concentrate on my timing which Murphy does stress that is important. Timing and playing in tune. Also it helps me to concentrate on the correct way she has taught learning to play the song. I will up the metronome when I begin playing the whole song without mistake. Does anyone else use the metronome?

I use a metronome, very important. I would rather hear a banjo slow and clean the fast and sloppy. Speed will come as you get better. Timming is the most importnat part, have fun by that fire. Pick one for the misfits ;-)
