Music from the green lanes of England

From Brown Dog Banjos on 5/6/2013 11:49:32 AM

Does any one else in this group have an interest in playing the music of England on the Banjo.  What you might call English old time or Green lane music.  There are 1000s tunes available sadly neglected by banjo players. LMJ

Sounds like a good idea.

Yes, I go along to the Slow and Steady session with this group. It is really helping now that I am also playing 4 string tenor.

Yes, I play with a group of folks who started out wanting to learn mainly English tunes (including several local morris dancers); we now do ceilidhs, barn dances etc. as well and I have watched the tune book expand from its original 20 tunes to 134 over 5 years. See folkatthebeech.org/ where you can actually download the tune book as a PDF file and the tunes in abc format. I am the only 5 string player in the Beech Band but we do have a GDAE plectrum player also.

Hello Keith Andy and d3zdm Thanks for your replies I was hoping for a bit more interest from a UK group but should Of known better. I get more interest in what I do from the Irish scots and welsh and practically any body in the world than I do from the English most of them barely know there is any English tradition.
I do not have any of my playing on the hang out but here is an example of Cornish tune on u-tube

Interestingly you are all in Lacashire. Keith and Andy the folk at the beech Chorley sessions would be worth a look if you do not already go.
Andy a lot of pipe tunes fit the banjo really well scottish and Northumbrian.
g3zdm I could come to your session and play about 90% of the list on fiddle but you are a bit far away 6 miles from Gatwich Aiport
The sloe works well on 5 string

Have you come across Ray Chandler - he is an English folk musician who plays traditional tunes on banjo: raychandler.net/music/

I bought his 'Riding Solo' cd and he very kindly included a second cd with some extra banjo tunes with it. I really like his banjo playing - he's an inspiration.
