Moving to Maine

From PJRedWing on 4/13/2012 7:00:34 AM

Howdy, Mainers!

My family and I are relocating to the Portland area this summer. I see that you have some nice festivals and jams in the area - Ossipee Valley (sp?), Thomas Point and the monthly jam in Buxton.

Are there any other bluegrass/banjo resources in the area that I should be aware of? I'm a novice picker, new to jamming (just finished Wernick Method class).

Thanks for sharing - I look forward to meeting many of you in the future.

Pat

i'm an old time banjo player, but i know a little about bluegrass in the area. You might check out 317 Main Street Music in Yarmouth for classes and jams, and also Acoustic Artisans in Portland. Both have websites.

5 Items that if you were here this week, you might want to find out more about. Scehdules change, so when you arrive, the offerings may be a bit different.

1. Empire Dine & Dance- Mondays an open Jam followed by Stowaways, a great local BG bandabout 9pm. Other BG events get scheduled during regular bar-time hours, around changing kegs and making great burgers. Owner Bill Umbrel plays some nice BG guitar.
2. Buck Dancer's Choice- Music store - good acoustic selection, repairs, strings, stands , capos, etc, as wll as a lot of amps for the closet rock n' roller in many of us... Aslo a good music teacher of BG banjo works pt as instructor there, BHO member Skip King.
3. Southern Maine BG Assn has a Jam about 20 minutes outside Portland Oct - April on a sunday each month. Some great players.
4. One Longfellow Square - smaller (150 seat?) venue featureing mostly acoustic players, although some other folks sneak in occaisiionaly as well. Have hosted Gibson Brothers, Ralph Stanley, Noam Pikelney and other BG names, as well as CD parties for more local players.
5. 317 Maine - in Yarmouth, ME. An acoustic music teaching center. I've taken lessons from Carter Logan, banjoist for the Jerks of Grass, and some others teachers in ensemble settings. Aslo a BG Jam Tuesday evenings, but will not be going during summer. Have had master classes with Tony Trishka, other BG names as they pass through Portland for various reasons...

Most of these places mentioned have their own websites or pages on Facewbook. Portland area is a wonderful place to live. See ya' there...

Wow - thanks for providing so much information so fast!

We're looking at Falmouth - heard good things about the school district.

I will definitely visit the venues and jams listed in your posts. Looking forward to playing with you.

Pat
