Hi!

From Dan Sparkman on 7/24/2011 5:37:44 AM

I found this group by accident, but it should help me a great deal to join it.

I am now writing songs, but I have no computer skills to bring them onto the internet.  Could someone please explain to me how to record and upload my songs on here or to myspace?

Last year I taught myself how to write and read music.  I am no great Mozart or anything, but I would recommend this to anyone who wishes to write (or play, or read).  I found that it is not as hard as it appears, and is a great help.  Yes, I do read tab, but like reading notes, I am not awesome at it by any means.

I look forward to trading experiences etc. with y'all.  --DAN

Hi, Dan - I just joined this group myself.
As for recording and uploading songs, you have several options. First, your computer might already have a recording program. If you have a movie-making program, for example, it may have an audio component.
Second, you can purchase recording software online - I think you can even get it free, but I paid about $80 for mine. It's called Mixcraft from acoustica.com. When you open it up, it looks like a mixing board. But it's very easy to use, especially if you are just recording banjo/vocal. I've used it to record and mix hundreds of songs.
And here's something I just did (based on a suggestion in a thread here at the Hangout): I went to Best Buy and picked up a Sony recorder for about $90. It's handheld, and mainly used for recording lectures and meetings, but it records in stereo and creates an mp3 file. It's easy to hit record, play until you get a recording you like, and erase what you don't want.
I'm in an online writing challenge (fiftyninety.fawmers.org/users/chip-withrow) and every song I've recorded so far this summer has been on the Sony.
Hope this helps - I'd love to hear some of your songs!

Hi Chip, and good to know ya! Thanks for these tips, which I shall surely consider. They are very helpful. Good luck in your online writing challenge.
