I have just mounted my first calfskin head using this method and it has been pointed out that this method puts two layers of skin over the tension ring rather than one layer when using the traditional method. The general consensus is that this will adversely affect the sound of the banjo. Here's the topic: http://www.banjohangout.org/topic/262986

Does anyone actually know for sure if this method sounds worse or even different than the traditional method?

	SoundsGoodToMe says: 5/20/2013 5:30:13 PM I can't say for sure, but it certainly seems like it would reduce the volume and sustain because the edge of the stretched head is meeting hide rather than brass. Might not be a bad thing though, could give a real plunky sound. I'd string it up to see how it sounds before changing it :)

Especially if it is neatly trimmed so that the excess hide removed and does not interfere with the main head surface. The proteins in the hide will naturally glue the layers together where they contact. Especially under tension - the bond will be quite sturdy. Most of the projected sound comes from the main vibrating surface. More mass around the edges (from the two bonded layers) might cause the vibrations from the head to drive the tone ring more effectively (who knows)? On a small diameter instrument like you are building...I don't think you will be able to hear any real impact at all. Good luck with it....
	Lyndon Smith says: 5/21/2013 5:55:49 AM Thanks jbalch, we'll have to wait to find out as the banjo has no neck yet, it's still to be made. The head was fitted on Sunday, is it too late to remove it, re-soak it and flatten it out, to be refitted later?
