OK, so I'm a folkie...

From Klondike Waldo on 8/26/2011 4:16:56 PM

I think I can handle that.   I'm old enough to remember the"Folk Scare "of the late 50's and 60s  and I play banjo three-fingered, but not really bluegrass style. I taught my middle school and Kindergarten kids some traditional folk songs with and without banjo and wrote a few for them as well. I' guess I'm Ok with being called a Folkie.

I consider myself a folkie as well, and it is a title I wear proudly. I'm playing a three finger style that has some bluegrass elements but is really more of a folk style (probably similar to what Klondike Waldo is doing).

I'd bet a lot of bluegrass banjo players started off in folk clubs playing folk music, I know I did.....although I enjoy bluegrass, It's nice to go back to folk music now and then for a pleasant change.

For about twenty-five years I was a musical monk, didn't listen much to music or care. Then it came back in a rush. I like songs that say something, can be political, can be enviromental, can be about love, or just a story about anything. I play in a sorta/kinda clawhammer style. I can't say for sure what folk music is but I think of myself as a late blooming folkie.

I am an unabashed folkie. I grew up on Kingston Trio, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul and Mary and others. I continue to play in a folk style, combining original and traditional music. While definitions of folk music may vary, there is no denying the power of a simple song simply sung. I'm happy to be with so many like-minded folks.

I am definitely also exploring more folk/old time music-especially for the ones with lyrics. Going a different route by doing flatpicking to a plectrum style banjo (5th string removed off a 5 string) for chording/melody.

I'm a folkie who played some rock and other stuff. Played music at mass for decades. Now the folk roots are showing. I play every week at a jam that's hard core "old" country (i.e.: 50's, 60's, 70's). So I freak them out when I play stuff they've never heard. This past Friday I played "Pack Up Your Sorrows" and I was asked where it came from. They sure didn't know who Richard farina was.

I was able to use music with my school kids, especially the junior grades. I was able, on occasion, to bring folk musicians into my school. I even brought them to the Mariposa Folk Festival to see it up close.

My years on volunteer staff at the Mariposa Festival was a great education into the musical world - there was just so much. These days it's often called "roots" music, but it's folk: the music played around kitchen tables, in living rooms, and at pubs by enthusiastic amateurs.

Like a lot of you, I heard "Tom Dooley" back in the day. Like a lot of you, I at some point wanted to go just a bit deeper. Still along way to go.

I'm an old folkie...grew up on the same stuff that Gary mentioned...55 years on the guitar and about 10 on the banjo. I play lead in a group of other folkies...one rehersal and about a gig a week, though, this week we had 3...worn out my Folk Banjo, Pure Dave and, Pete's blue book tryin' to get up to speed on my long neck. I'll play and sing anywhere. We have an Irishman in our group and I get to explore the Irish songs that I did not really get too excited about back then...love 'em now
