New Member, 20L, and now 2 Brooks. . .

Howdy-

I'm new at clawhammer but shopped a lot, and after learning about Brooks Banjos there was no more question. Anyway, my new custom 20L Bacon just arrived and it's incredible. Now, somewhat "inadvertently" I have two Brooks.

Here's the story. A few months ago, shortly after ordering my custom Brooks banjo, I had the opportunity to buy a Spartan from a store that was closing. I purchased it new. My thought was to then sell it when my custom banjo arrived, which just did. I'm trying to show discipline and put the ad up right away before I think too much about it. . . We'll see.  The Spartan is beautiful, and incredible sounding. The Spartan 12" and the 20L 11".

Keep an eye out for a possible ad for an "as new" Spartan, but in the meantime I'm blown away by the tone, workmanship, class, and mojo these banjos exude. Brooks deserves being recognized as one of the best of today' builders.

I visited him in Portland an talked old-time banjos and played them and a week later ordered a 20L walnut 11". May 1, I spotted a cherry Spartan on BHO and called. I was going nuts waiting and dreaming how much sweeter it would be than the Rustler I was playing. 24 hours later we had it, along with fries and salad at McMenamin's. No tone ring, all cherry, elite head, original bright D'Addario EJ55 strings & a soft case and schubb capo and $50 off for picking it up. I'm still waiting for may original 20L & getting advise on my earlier Brooks Spartan from it's builder. How fun is this journey? And I never knew anything about music, but has opened up my world. jsb

Tuned that new/used Spartan head to 85 which improved its presence and keyed at about F# with a drum dial. The strings looked new, but later found out they were original and changed them. What a presence now. jsb
