From ChuckJo on 8/23/2011 12:38:55 PM

It looks like the piece on Daniel Jatta and the akonting will be on All Things Considered today.  Right now, its scheduled in the segment that runs at 5:50pm eastern time, though thats subject to change.  The story will run again at 7:50 and 9:50pm in feeds for the Midwest and West Coast.  Youll also be able to read and listen to the story on our website, www.npr.org.

ps.  I was part of the original interview.  I am told that some of my banjo playing appears in the story

Thanks Chuck!

I read your announcement just in time to catch the intervisew, with Daniel, on our local NPR Station.

Thanks to Ulf Jagfor's generous sponsorship -- Daniel Jatta was able to make a presentation at the Banjo Collector's Gathering, in Concord MA, back in Nov. 2000.

I'm proud to have been involved in the preparation for that preliminary presentation -- and in the first video-taped interview with Daniel -- back when the Akonting/Ekonting, was not even on the radar of most ethnomusicologists...

(Our Group Administrator, Marc Nerenberg, was an earlier seeker of the African roots of the banjo -- long before that... I remember when Ken Perlman first told me about meeting Marc -- before writing the BNL article about him.)

Typing "Akonting' into Google, back in 2000, yeilded less than a SINGLE page of hits....

Now -- there are 35, 400 hits -- taking 90 PAGES to display. Using the alternate French spelling, "Ekonting', yields another 14,1000 hits -- running another 55 pages.

I also would like to call attention to Prof. Eric Cherry's collegial support of Ulf's and Daniel's findings. And to Shlomo Pestcoe's amazing website -- devoted to the "African Roots of the Banjo" in ALL of its different forms and varieties. (Shlomo has also collaborated with Greg Adams, on a few articles.)

Best-
Ed Britt

Daniel Jatta's efforts and his story are increasingly significant to a growing number of people. He deserved this notable feature on NPR. Greg Allen and Chuck Levy have done a great thing in making this story happen.

I think it's great that social networking sites like this have members who are willing to dig into the details. I wish I could have been at the 2000 Banjo Collectors Gathering as Ed was to see Daniel and Ulf's original presentation--a true turning point! It takes a community of people to become engaged and rethink how we understand the past and the present.
