Has anyone ever used a square hole drill bit for cutting the rim?
I drill the center of the hole with normal wood drill bit and then I square out the hole with a hole saw and a metal file. I think the square drill bits go on sale after the 31st of march, grab one for me while you’re at it.
I do want to try one someday, in the meantime I've either been drilling small corner holes and then after scoring connecting lines go to work with the chisel. Also, I have drilled a larger center hole, and formed the square accordingly to match the dowel stick dimensions.

I was gonna try and use it with my drill press.
I drill the center out round and then cut the corners out with a jigsaw. It's pretty fast, but a hollow chisel mortiser would be neater.
Remember, you cannot make the hole perpendicular to the rim. It has to be angled at the angle of the dowel stick
To start the cut do Yall measure from the bottom of the dowel rod to the top of the neck squared then make the cut on the rim.
