Around 1972 my dear friend Bob Webb and I made some recordings, thanks to his friend from LA, Don McCarty, whose father was the manager of a Bank of America in West Los Angeles. Recorded after hours by Mark Damon Cohen, the session completely passed from my memory but the tapes popped up several years ago and this is the result, released late June, 2026. Bob, who was the owner of the Heritage Folk Music Coffee House in Mission Beach, San Diego, and I played together for several years under the casual/nonce name “Heritage String Band.”
These tracks are a representative cross section of our repertory: instrumentals with my hammered dulcimer accompanied by Bob’s responsive banjo; and old-time songs with my autoharp and Bob’s guitar. There is a rare instrumental “Road to Austin” which we only played a very few times and Bob’s banjo meditation on the popular West Coast favorite, “Sally in the Garden.”
[Recorded live – no overdubs- on a SONY TC-770-2 half-track stereo tape recorder at 15 ips direct to tape – no Mixer. Mics used were a Beyer M201- and a Beyer M160.]
