does anyone recognize this rim as a production banjo or is this a homegrown idea? rim goes from .71 at bottom to .38 at top. looks really well made

That looks like a Slingerland rim from the 1920's, possibly from a Style B.

Slingerland. Had one of these that was converted to a 5 string by somebody in Seattle in the early 60’s. Can’t remember his name, but apparently he did a number of conversions as I managed to get two of them over the years back in the 80’s. They Sounded really good.

My feeling is Slingerland also.
