Hey everyone,
I don't think I have posted anything in 10+ years! Got back into banjo recently.
In the past I have always used a Schatten pickup, specifically the BJ-02 because I like having the volume control right at the banjo. It worked fine for years, and still works.
Recently I have wanted a more natural sound, so I have been exploring the Gold Tone ABS mics. I currently play in a cover band with bluegrass instrumentation - upright, banjo, mando, guitars, sometimes dobro. We play mostly bar gigs, so we run amplified for those. From what I am reading, it sounds like the dynamic version of the gold tone mic would be a better option for avoiding feedback.
My main question is for anyone who knows - I have the LR Baggs Venue DI preamp. I like it, it works fine. Is there any reason I should get the Gold Tone preamp with the Gold Tone Mic - in other words, is the GT preamp that comes with the package going to get me anything that the LR Baggs won't? I like the volume boost on the LR Baggs, and overall it seems to have more EQ options than the gold tone one. I just don't want to not get something I would need. If the GT preamp is a better option than the LR Baggs, I'll probably just sell the LR Baggs and get the whole GT package with the preamp and mic. But I don't want to buy something that is not necessary.
So to sum it up, does anyone know if the LR Baggs preamp works fine with the Gold Tone mic and not the GT preamp? Or if there is a better option than the GT mic I am all ears, they just seem like the most economical.
I think ideally, I'd like to run a mix of my Schatten pickup combined with the GT mic, but I will have to play around with it. Thanks for any input anyone may have.
-Noah
