I found this out by accident one day when I wanted to capo my guitar to A and had left my guitar capo at the previous night's jam.
I put my banjo capo on 2 and it left the low E string open.

I found the "relative" low D tuning on the 6th string and followed this with using 2 banjo capos and maintaining that 2 fret difference anywhere on the neck.
And last night while watching YouTube I saw a guitar player with a capo on the 2nd fret and letting the low E ring open.
This works nice for retaining the chord position of the 6th string by not retuning it,too.
Doesn't fit the C position, but the string can be normally fretted.

Sounds strong with the D and G chord shapes and others.
