If you get to know yourself, what part is doing the knowing, and which part is sought to be known?

I defer to Donald Rumsfeld:

"There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know."

Test pilot Chuck Jeager called the latter the ughknown.

The most advantageous part of wisdom (knowing one's self) is knowing/understanding how you learn.

I don't have an educated answer to the original question BUT... One of our most learned college instructors told us that the main by- product of learning is learning how much we don't know about a particular subject. If I were to apply for a job the interviewer would probably asked what I knew about our related subject. If I were to tell him that I know an excessive amount of what it is that I don't know. Would I get the job ? Would theory ever win out over reality ? [yes.. only in politics]

The part doing the knowing is your conscious brain, the part you are trying to know is your subconscious brain.

The part doing the knowing is your conscious brain.

The part you are trying to know are
- your stored values (conscious and subconscious) that guide your thoughts and behaviors
- your experiences (remembered and suppressed) that guide your thoughts and behaviors
- your biases, stereotypes and other knee-jerk driving beliefs that guide your thoughts and behaviors
- your fears (rational and irrational) that guide your thoughts and behaviors
- your desires (conscious and subconscious) that guide your thoughts and behaviors
- the societal messages and beliefs you have been endocrinationwith that guide your thoughts and behaviors

"Knowing yourself" can only mean ridding yourself of the convenient and comforting lies and myths you have been taught and given and also those you have made up for yourself. It means a commitment to reality, about yourself, your country, your world. Reality is never comforting and rarely welcome in polite society.
