I'm also having problems with my mower. Got it out, put new gas in it, checked the oil and the filter, everything okay. Pulled to start it and it wouldn't start. Pulled until my arm gave out. There was no "spark" to get it started so I figured: needs a new spark plug. Got one, got got it put in. Still wouldn't start. Asked my plumber (there to fix a leak) if he'd see if he could start it. He couldn't, either. So, I've got to decide whether to get a new one or just pay to have my yard mowed from now on. FYI: the mower is over 10 years old, so probably not worth fixing.

Getting old isn't much fun sometimes, is it?

Onto a tangent, but I can't figure out why "somebody" doesn't make a front-mount mower that's hydraulically driven [might entail a belt to drive the 2 or 3 blades, but it wouldn't need alignment/tightening].   Heck, go all out and make the mowing deck interchangeable with a roto-tiller and a snow blower.

I was killing time one day on a John Deere website and came across a place to pass ideas/suggestions on to them ... so I did .... never even got confirmation that they'd received it.  C'est la vie??

In my books a 10 Y.O. mower [household use, not commercial] should still have plenty of life left in it.  We got ours second-hand 13 years ago and [knock on wood 2.5 months from now] it'll keep on ticking.  Our snowblower lasted 40 .... and would still be working had I replaced the friction drive wheel rather than "skrimping."  The roto-tiller has 32 years on it and I'm hoping that, come May, doing some incantations over a dead chicken  will prove fruitful [actually it still runs ... though quite rough ... the ^%&$ing carb is "getting to me."]   Dunno whether or not it's relevant, but all ^^ are Craftsman .... though I dunno who actually "made" them.

If it doesn't have spark, have someone take the cranker cover off and sand the metal part of the flywheel. That is where it gets its spark. They tend to crust over thru the winter.

I guess I will mow another year, though I do use garden and trimming help-have for years. Hernia and minus-a-kidney be damned. Mostly I am just working on my old truck and helping around the house.. Brad

I feel for ya, Terry.

This is the weekend I put a new carb on an old weed wacker/pruner that was given to me many years ago. If it works it'll be the first time it worked in my possession. If it works.

Gas engines vs battery power lawn equipment. When my ancient gas mower dies, I will make the decision to either hire my mowing, or go that nice quiet battery power. My yard with grass is fairly small so I would be able to cut it all in one charge. Brad

we are battery leaf blower and weed eater but the mower is still gas... it is one my dad bought about 4 years before he died... 2011 i think.
but with the acreage i mow gas is about the only way .... i put new blades on last year and tubes in the front tires... for some reason the rears never leak down. but a new belt and pulleys are on the way.

I still have grannies' 30" monkey-wards push mower. Does a wonderful job. Quiet. No motor. Cuts like scissors. But I can mow as much as five acres. By the end of summer, it's about half of that. Done with 2 ztrs.

my wife has been on me about getting a new one of those zero turns ,,, my step son uses kubotas for his yard mowing service....    i just can't see investing that much in a mower when mine does the job.. i mean i got time and i ain't getting paid so why rush and be 7000 dollars broker ?

If you have a bunch of trees or obstacles, this is the reason for ztr mowers. The other thing I noticed, the engine behind you is much quieter than a tractor style. But better is the sworn enemy of good enough.

i have a few obstacles but most are 3 giant oaks with little grass under them anyway. my shop and the house ,, 1 lone mini magnolia in the back thats it. the rest is pretty open. right now its near 2 acres i let the neighbors kid with the bush hog knock out the rest.
i helped my stepson buy his first kubota ZT several years ago and it was 6 grand..... me living on SS check ,, just don't make sense when i can spend 100 or 200 on this thing and cut down grass.

But, but, but, Terry ... "you can justify anything."

Factor in the re-sale value, divide by the number of years you'll be using it, add in some $$ you'll get from yer casual lawn-mowing business [in the time you'll save doing yours], underestimate the upkeep/repairs, etc., etc.   Yer welcome.    cheeky

And from the unsolicited advice dept. .... my b-i-g preference is a front mount rather than the typical (?) zero-turn.  Heck, IF I could find a 36" front mount, I might even be able to "justify" it.

I got the new carb on and it started right up.   I had to then MacGyver an air filter since the housing isn't there.  Sunday morning I went to the tree to use it, and on the first pull...the starter pull chord broke.   And so she sits in my garage waiting to be fixed...again.
