tang sight on my Winchester Model 63 Carbine will not go down horizontally in the "resting" position. What am I doing wrong?

I thought I did. Here it is.  You will notice a little "j" hook just below the post near the screw.  To raise the post into the position it is in, you pull the j hook toward the receiver and the post pops up into a vertical position.  To get it down I assumed you pull the j hook and lower the post.  I still think that is correct but it is just not working.  Just wanted to see if anyone knows for sure ......... don't want to force anything.

The 2nd one looks to be like yours..

Mebee a dab of penitrating oil?
The next thing I would try is just loosening the screw a bit..

Me sight dose not work the same as yours dose it looks to be.

Thanks Fig. You are right, it is the second sight ..... Marbles W-8. The first one is a Lyman and I have one exactly like it on another Model 63 Winchester. It is lowered by pressing the button on the side. I think the Marbles is lowered by pulling the j hook at the bottom (shown pretty well in the Ebay photo). It is not stuck, but as a matter of fact probably moves too freely, but it does nothing to release the post so you can lay it down horizontally. It really does no harm staying up, but can be easily damaged when carrying the rifle in its case. I don't want to have to pay $369 for a "new" old on on Ebay.

I want to be careful loosening anything, as I understand the spring is a real bugger to get back in right if it pops out.

Geez, John .. I admire your optimism.

I don't have experience with gun sights, but as often as not I can't even find a spring that pops out, let alone get it back in right.  sad

Dale ..... I love Marbles stuff.  I have a pretty nice collection of Marbles knives.  They made just about everything under the sun regarding hunting paraphernalia.

I took my rifle over to my brothers and he looked at it a few minutes and merely pushed the sight backwards until it locked into the down position. I asked him "how did you do that". He said he just "pushed it down". The spring is so stiff that it takes a good amount of pressure to press it down, and when I was messing with it the last thing I wanted to so was to force anything. He said that the sight is so well made that you were not going to break anything, but I still did not want to take a chance. I guess I ought to take the rifle out more than once a year to look at it, but I don't need it to shoot, as I have another Model 63 Winchester that I can shoot (without a peep sight).
