Has run ..Ahmuck...
Thinking USA...
Becose that is where I am..
To me one of the very first signs of this is when..
You collect scrap metals n bring the to the scrap yard.. for a bit of $cash..
All of a sudden you must show ..I.D. ..to get paid as so you can be ..Taxed on it...
Hope that dose not happen to the bottle n can redemption folks..
Lord ..Knows ..them folks gots ..ALL...THE $ IN THE WORLD...
They get all that $.. n thiers mates are free..... :0/
Al ..... I doubt that they are doing so you can be taxed, as I doubt they send that information to the IRS. I suspect they do it for the same reason pawn shops require an ID when you sell gold or silver. When the authorities investigate a theft of gold, silver, copper, or probably any scrap metal (including catatylic converters) they want to know who sold them to the dealer.
I know around here it has nothing to do with taxes. A lot of construction sites were having copper wire and plumbing stolen and taken to scrapyards. It was so bad that you could look at utility poles in any given neighborhood and the bare #6 copper ground wire going from the neutral to the ground rods were missing from the sidewalk to about 7' above the ground.
We get a lot of scrap wire from legit demo on jobsites and that's my beer money that Uncle Sam don't know about.

They can't keep the trains running because the tweakers keep stealing the wire.

Oh dang propane tanks too. Another reason to bury them.
Dunno just how much copper there is in a transformer, but apparently even being live/in-service isn't always sufficient deterrent:

I think the media got that wrong. They say the thieves are stealing the tanks for the brass valves, but brass doesn't pay that much and there isn't enough brass to make it worth stealing the tanks. They were probably just stealing the tanks to power their heaters.
Back when meth labs were more prevalent, the "cooks" would use propane tanks to hold anhydrous ammonia. If you came across a dump in the woods and found a tank with lots of fuzzy green corrosion on the brass valve, it was almost certainly one of those tanks and could quite possibly still hold enough ammonia to kill you if you it got out. This info comes from a family member who was a narcotics detective.
About 7 years ago the theft of catalytic converters became a major problem. The newer cars are designed to make the theft impossible without a real hoist . Many of the cheaper vehicles are no longer using expensive metals in their converters. Fortunately the legislators finally woke up and began to enforce the junk dealers. They are now required to get names, addresses, and the vehicle license plate of the scrap collector.
The only way this will be reported is if the scrap yard collected your taxpayer information. Did they have you fill out a IRS W9 Form (Request for Taxpayer Information) or collect your social security number? If they did, expect to see a 1099 next year. If not, they have no way to report this and you have no worries (overreacting).
I doubt you have any worries here.
