Well, it's been exactly one year since stepping into the banjo-verse. It started out a bit experimental but has become a daily outlet. I’ve never encountered such a spectrum of musical genres and sub-genres that speak more deeply to my Central-Pennsylvanian soul. A banjo might not be for everyone, but it sure is something to this one.
My life goal is to get 200-300 songs under my belt that I can recall at a moment’s notice—not difficult songs, mostly folk songs; songs that I can sing with children and friends. Right now, I have around 40 (?) committed to memory (some are deeeeper in the memory, like some of the Christmas tunes I arranged myself). Monthly, I have the opportunity to lead our homeschool co-op in song at a local nursing home. It has been a blessing--to myself and to the residents.
My banjo goals for 2026 are (1) develop a more traditional clawhammer technique (I play almost exclusively 'upstroke' or 'Seeger-style'. It’s great for leading a group in song, but it’s not terribly delicate or subtle), (2) incorporate simple rolls and drop thumbing into my upstroke technique, (3) branch out into alternate tunings, and (4) master another 30-40 songs.
I am planning to begin Lukas Pool's (Ozark Banjo Co.) free clawhammer lessons. I love Lukas' soft, articulate style. I also enjoy the clawhammer playing of folks like John Balch, Chris Coole, and Jason Romero.
Does anyone have any recommendations for other traditional clawhammer or old time, online lessons/series?
I have attached a video of my oldest son (Ambrose, age 4) and I singing one of our family favorites, "John Henry." Thank you to everyone at BHO who has encouraged me over the last year!
