We are frequent visitors to Cuba..Holguin area, great resort we've gone to for 25 years, often multiple times each year. We just went in Jan, supposed to go back in March. We had to cancel our plans as Canadian air companies have all cancelled flights due to fuel shortages. Cuba has been on the edge of sustainability for a while now, but our recent trips have been fraught with shortages of certain foods and basics. I fear it will get even worse now for the Cuban people. My heart goes out to them.

Canada and Cuba have friendly relations and are mutual trading partners. Is there not anything Canada and their other main stream trading partners do to pump up the lives of the everyday Cuba citizen? I'm sure (or at least hope) that money that visitors spend, like yourself, goes directly into the pockets of those shops and businesses you do business with.

John..Canada has always had good relations with Cuba, but their economy is complicated. They were fairly prosperous when the Soviet Union was intact, and traded most of Cubas resources for food, oil, etc. However since the fall of the Soviet Union, and the long standing trade embargo's from the US, there just isnt enough coming into Cuba or being exported to support them. I honestly think the only way Cuba is going to prosper is with a new Govt that can negotiate trade agreements with the US similiar to Mexico and Canada.

Yeah its hard to. I wanted to highlight the struggles of the Cuban people..they are just the nicest beautiful people Ive met. I hope all countries can come together to support them in creating a place everyone can enjoy. It really is a diamond in the rough. Their history alone is breathtaking.
I think most Americans (IMO) in my age group, born in the 50’s, 60’s , have a bad image of Cuba . It was forbidden and really not talked about, forgotten and if talked about, never in a good way. I hope that changes, but like anything else, it will be a slow struggle!!!
Dave, I also hear the ice fishing there sucks!!!
Slammer!!!

regarding the ice fishing.
I socialized with a fair amount of Cubans in my Key West days. Most had fled Castro, some had rafted over recently, all knew some who had died trying. None of them had anything good to say about Cuba but were very pro USA, very pro Freedom, and they understand what that means more than many of us. Some of them should teach USA civics classes! They had very good, very strong, very sweet coffee.
