I'm wanting a JBS Sloan tone ring, but am clueless about the difference between the 20 hole and no hole tone rings. Right now I have a Yates V33 Venom no hole, and haven't had a 20 hole for years. Just curious what you think.

I have had several of both and find the difference to be very small. I talked with Arthur Hatfield years ago and our opinions were similar. We felt the no hole might have a slightly quicker response and was possibly, better suited to a mahogany necked banjo. Similarly, any difference in mellowness would go toward the 20 hole. These are not facts, just opinions and likely will vary with different experiences.
BTW, I have a JBS 113 S nickel 20 hole ring I am not using if you would be interested in it.

Unscientifically but with some experience I agree that a No-hole tends to sound better with mahogany and a 20 hole sounds better on maple. Walnut? Take your pick. Don't know why that is but that's been my experience through the years. YMMV.
