Hey everybody,
i am searching for a supplier of banjo shoes (brass) and metric hooks (steel) in Europe. The customs duties from the US to Europe are very high so it would be nice to avoid this expense.

I know prucha in the czech republic but i wrote two emails to them requesting some parts and didn't get an answer yet. I don't want to buy cheap stuff on ebay.

So if you know something it would be very nice if you could help me out.

thanks a lot

Did you try Madinter in Spain? https://www.madinter.com/fr/

There's also justecordes in France - I believe he's a luthier as well, so he should be able to point you to where you need to go  https://www.justecordes.fr/index.php

I purchase a lot of banjo bits from Aliexpress. There shoes which are non-magnetic Shoes .I have filed the bottom of one to reveal a copper layer which I believe is coated on before nickel plating. I assume these are brass. There may be places near you that can chemically remove the nickle. I have these ones Hooks and traditional standard round style Hooks 2 which I thought I got from the same place but cannot find them there or on Temu but are available from.

You are correct about the shipping costs from the US.

I'd be interested in picking up these same parts for a banjo I just bought, so I'd like to know if you find a source.

It looks like Madinter and StewMac are working together (or the same company?) so if StewMac has them, Madinter should be able to get them. Or I'll just have to wait until the next time I'm back in the States (which won't be for a couple of years at this current timeline).

I am probably going to make brass hooks and shoes by myself in the near future. It's way cheaper to buy a thread cutter than importing stuff from outside the EU. If the hook thread is metric, you can use simple metric brass nuts which only cost a few cents each. A little bit of shaping and you're done. Of course it's an investment of time, but you have full control about the result and don't pay 10 times the price of the original product because of taxes, customs and shipping costs..
