I work in very large scale server architecture and was talking with some of the security guys. This isn’t news as the major news outlets have covered it but a fairly sophisticated industry has sprung up in Southeast Asia in the business of any and every scam possible online. There are entire specializations of communes some with thousands of people posting fake ads to get purchases, some working major sales channels with huge teams such as Amazon, poshmark or eBay, some groups developing and selling bots and ways to get around moderators and AI based prevention. It’s become a version of Silicon Valley with career paths and strategic scam mission statements.
I have always believed the first tangible advances in AI will be 1) spam systems and spam prevention systems fighting each other. 2) scam and scam prevention systems fighting each other and 3) advertising and ad-nix systems fighting each other.
For the consumer and individual online the best prevention for now will be lower trust in online activities and establishing person to person relationships with groups; a tribe of sorts.
