"in a northern/winter/salt state"...
'nuff said--typical for those areas (not called the "rust belt" for nothing)
4 years and 40,000 miles...and 4 winters (especially if kept in a garage) and you'll get a ton of corrosion.
Not much you can do about it (other than not keeping it in the garage) but even then...

Was sitting for 5 years when I got it for $200. Did alot of work to get it up to speed but it was worth it. 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500, single cab, long bed, 2WD, 4.3L V6 vortec engine. No electric nothing...manual locks, manual windows, no AC. About as much of a base model as you can get. Solid and runs like a champ though.
We have very aggressive stuff on the roads here in Maine. It is scary. I tell everyone to undercoat at least every other year. Maybe annually.
I recently picked up a 2006 Prius from a customer who had it not running in her drive way. I bought it ($200) and got it running. (Don't leave any hybrid parked for more than a week without running!)
It was almost like new underneath. Apparently they took it to a car wash regularly. Never undercoated either.
My car is a 2007 Prius with 480,500 miles on it. I has had some rust repair. I am trying to get it to 500k.

Like other said...undercoat and you should be good.
IF yiou undercoat it, there will be mechanics that will no longer work on the vehicle (undercoating makes repairs a significant hassle, and in many cases preclude completing a job in the allotted (book) time).

I live firmly in the rust belt have never encountered a single technician that refused to work on my vehicles.
From my experience it's the complete opposite, the lack of rust and corrosion = quicker jobs with way less unforeseen headaches and broken bolts/parts.

What does everyone think? Crazy, or typical?

Steel wool...

Ol Blue. We were born 200 miles apart in 1952. I traded my motorcycle for the pickup and some cash. We graduated from college together. Then we went to field camp together. It got me to the hospital when I bled. For many years it served as a my handy mover and hauler. I could nearly fix everything myself on it.
Sorry, Blue. That I have shown so much disrespect for you the over the last decade or so. Thank you, for all of your service and companionship. Brad

We spent our summers a mile or so from the Minas Basin in Nova Scotia from about 2000 - 2010.
The advancing of the surface rust on my utility trailer was noticeable from week-to-week .... very much unlike the situation in beautiful west-central Man-ee-toe-bah.
Had to un-seize the brake calipers on my '99 F-150 most every year, and being a fast learner, after only the second episode I learned to check before driving it. When mechanics worked on our vehicles, they [almost] invariably commented on how rust free they were, or asked where they had come from.
Here's a pic of a rusty truck (?) I wish was mine! ... came across it on one of N.S.'s back roads.

Around here you wouldn't be able to sell a 2wd truck no matter what the price is.
