More than just the accent. The food and the culture are a shadow of what once was, and I'm talking about among the working class in the last half of the 20th century.

I have a lady friend who's originally from Massachusetts. She's been here for nearly 20 years and she still occasionally adds those extra "R's" to her words. She has tried very hard to take care of her northern accent but it still creeps in. I think it will be the same with us southerners: we'll always have some of that southern draaaaawwwwwllll!!!
I can remember calling New York for reservations for my boss and they immediately knew I was from the south. Wonder how (G). I didn't realize I had that Texas drawl. And, of course, when they mentioned it, I made it worse!!
My Mom still warshes her kellers in cold wardur.
When I lived in the Ozarks all of the kids from town (Springfield, Missouri) spoke generically, but the ones from the small towns or the country still had an accent.
