Hi All,
Kudos to Gold Tone!!
I just want to say that I recently picked up a travel banjo from Gold Tone, and I am completely blow away.
So I could have gotten the composite version (AC-Traveller) with no tone ring for $370, or the CC-50TR Traveller for $400 with a rolled brass tone hoop. I figured $30 was worth the following stellar appointments for such a low price point banjo, such as:
1) The rolled brass tone hoop, which I already mentioned (I was expecting no tone 'ring' equivalent at this level)
2) The Ome-style 5th string pip being on the same level as the 5th fret, which makes retuning/capo-ing so much smoother
3) A proper fret under the nut to negate any nut wear and tear as the stings vibrate, and also to have a standard string depth at the zero fret
4) A decent quality armrest
5) A very hefty, solid, parallel pull tailpiece. With a tension adjustment screw.
6) Actual decent guitar tuners, which I admittedly still swapped out because I get freaked out when tuners stick out sideways. My issue, not theirs.
7) A proper rosewoood fretboard!!
8) And finally, a truss rod.
I am terrifically happy with this little travel 'jo.
Hope this helps some travelling peeps!

Originally posted by RDPI went even smaller and got a C scale size banjo off Amazon and put heavier gauge strings on it so I could put it in G tuning like a regular scale length banjo. Play claw hammer tunes on it. It has a eight inch pot on it.
Did the same fir my grandson, but find the short scale adds to the finicky tuning problems. Can't stand the standard tuners.
