Many moonings ago, Mom bought a hand-carved birdbath from a local artist.
Nobody remembers if it CAME with the inside of the bowl painted blue, or if Mom painted it.

The question before us is:
Since the bowl is made of "Indiana sandstone", does it NEED to be painted with any sort of sealant?

I figure there are enough stone cutters in the hundred thirty thousand or more OutHangers, that somebody will know.

If Indiana sandstone isn't too different from Ohio sandstone, I would say no. I have seen dozens of vintage sandstone water troughs and none of them have been sealed. I would think a bird bath would be no different.

Sandstone typically has porosity....but not necessarily permeability.

Fill it full of water and see if the water soaks through and drips from the underside.
