It seems clear from the discussion in another thread that different members here have different ideas of what “flaming” is. Some seem to label any criticism or disagreement as “flaming.” Others, including me, think “flaming” is the term for insulting remarks and name-calling beyond normal, civil criticism. So where do you stand? What is “flaming”?

Your definition is the most accurate and succinct I've come across.

I agree with you, Bill, anything that gets personal and insulting or overly sarcastic.

I would say that "flaming" is low informational, high emotional, criticism.

Snarky sarcastic intellectual criticism would not be flaming. (though not necessarily better).

Thank you kindly.

I agree with Bill in essence, but I also agree with Tom that it isn't so easy to know where to draw the line. Some people are easily offended, or flamed if you want, and they stay offended forever, others not so much so. Here, you really don't know what kind of person you are trading barbs with.

the ''normal and civil'' type of criticism is in the'' eye of the beholder'' and this will be judged by their own personal history-- so one can't do that completely --while walking in the shoes of others--usually -- enough time paints the portrait --the amount of
hate vs love-
sharp tongue vs padded punch -
holier - than thou vs in the same boat
etc.etc.
the days when someone kicks another in the ribs and gets several camaraderie likes are long gone around here --that is good but ,sadly enough--social media has fallen to the back burner and the hang out is no exception --for a while anyway

personally I have gotten to a point where I can bow out with grace when the need strikes --Then the opposition   loses their chosen object --without  me participating in --an ongoing rebuttal war

All this time my idea of flaming was someone who is over expressing their choice of attire in flamboyant fashion choices.

Right now, "flaming" is the poison oak all over my body. Every year. Every year, I get it. Every year I think I know what it looks like, but I never do until, oops, did I just yank out some poison oak? Idiot.
