Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit and walk through a luthier shop in DFW with hundreds of violins and every cousins all the way up to a rack of bass that held more than 20. It was really fascinating and when I asked questions the luthier took the time to show me the insides and curves. Most of his work is repair and refurbishing and he had one that is owned by the Dallas symphony orchestral that is Italian and over 200 years old. I had never looked closely at these instruments and it was quite fascinating. There were manes of horsetail for the bows and this row of tiny wood planes. Most fascinating is that he uses this complicated set of internal clamps and pliers and tweezers to work through the f holes to repair struts and braces without removing the sound board.

A friend who is an audio engineer asked me if I wanted to come as he was picking up his upright bass that he plays for jazz. I learned a new appreciation for something I had never even thought about before.
