I'm selling this great 2007 Blackjack I've had for 11 years, "to make room" for another pre-war.
Original Gibson case in excellent condition, combo lock never set, still pinned with red plastic.
The only reason this banjo isn't "excellent" is because of the character wear and darkening of the gold over copper plating on the tension hoop and tone ring, which I happen to think is one of the great characteristics of the Blackjack -- it ages like a 1920s gold Gibson. Photos show the wood finish is outstandingly nice. Particular patina on the armrest showing the characteristic red copper showing. Flange plating (not copper flashed I don't think) is cleaner and brighter. Resonator thumbscrews have nickel plate showing under the gold, from skin friction. Likewise the tuner gear covers show gold worn down to faint, dull nickel.
Original tension hooks were had gold worn enough to show the nickel tops of the hooks, so I put them in the case and replaced them with a set of Prucha hooks with extra heavy/dark gold over copper plate.
Tailpiece suffered the typical break at the 90 degree angle and I replaced it with a Golden Gate gold plated base, retaining the "X" engraved cover. Broken base and unused Golden Gate cover (no engraving) are in the case.
Volume, clarity, tone, carrying power, etc are all excellent. I called this banjo my "brute" for public appearances on a sound system. You do NOT have to get close to the mic! This banjo isn't "just" a mahogany Granada - no! It has a distinct "boom" tone with the typical shorter mahogany duration and dry sound with less overtone "zing". Head tuned in range of G to G#.
I will post a video as soon as I can record one.
More photos available if you're interested.
$4200, will ship to continental US or travel a bit in northeast US to meet buyer.
