The ever-popular folk blues that Elizabeth Cotten made famous. Here’s a bare-bones version for folks in the early to intermediate stages of fingerpicking the guitar; no slides, hammer-ons, bends, or pulloffs.

That was the first Travis picking tune I learned on guitar back in the 60's. Mike Lawrrence was in Bardstown, KY, for the summer as the banjoist in the outdoor musical, "The Stephen Foster Story." Mike very generously let me shadow him that summer and he taught me Travis picking on guitar and Scruggs picking on the banjo. A lifetime gift of music from him.

I wasn't aware of Mike Lawrence,, he is somewhat of a renaissance man, having graduated from Peabody on classical guitar and the on to film making for many years, besides his banjo and guitar picking endeavors.

Chuck, maybe 10 years ago or so, I found Mike on the web and learned about his documentaries and bought a couple. I also thanked him for how he helped me and gave a priceless (to me, anyway) gift to me. His reply? "I think I remember Bardstown."
BTW some 4 or 5 years after learning from Mike, I was the banjoist in "The Stephan Foster Story." They were desperate, I guess.

dbrooks Well done, David,, , Mike would be proud.
I read your bio - I met Dan Levenson in Yuma, AZ a few years back at a fiddlers contest- had a long conversation with him and bought 2 of his CH books in case my right hand fingers give out for 3-finger banjo picking. Nice guy.
