How's everyone? Long time no see.

Well, I play my Nechville now because my old Goldie is heavy on my sixty-five-year-old shoulder.
Without checking the label, I think it's a 1984 model. It isn't signed by J.D.
I bought it new from Mandolin Brothers in the late 1980s. It's in near mint condition but needs a new head and a good cleaning, which I'll do.
I replaced the original tailpiece with a gold plated Price, which I think is one of the best made. Someone bought the old one.
It would come in an Ameritage case, also near mint.

Oh, yeah. Richie Dotson replaced all the frets not long before I stopped playing it, so they're in great shape.

I know the 81 models are quite pricey, so I wonder what a fair price for this one is.

Any guesses?

I dunno; I never thought of them being particularly pricey. But in checking, avoid confusing asking price with selling price. You often dont really know what the latter was.

They are selling in the 6000 to 8000 dollar range depending on originality and condition

I remember an old thread -- maybe 15 years ago -- which asked the question (paraphrased) "would some Asian banjos ever become vintage/collectible?"

Seems like at the time 2,400 or so for a Gold Star Crowe model seemed unrealistic.

Look at where they are now.
Right up close to what a gen-u-ine 1990s Gibson Granada can bring...

Hi, Scott. Even the ones after 1981?

I would expect a 1984 to be right there at 6000 and maybe more depending on all the facts

Remember that Mandolin Brothers, Elderly were selling those Gold Stars for more than Gibson was selling RB-3s etc. after Greg Rich took over. That didn't last long but this is the era you're asking about.

I bought mine used around 1996 or so for $1200.00.
1981 # 76.
As a victim of the 2008 great recession it is no longer in my possession.

the early 80s goldstar banjos were the best made and sounding banjos since the mid 1940s.. thats why they are bringing the prices. i think gibson sued goldstar over those banjos,, i think ?
