That's gorgeous, Chuck.
I have had the privilege, since moving from a surprisingly good Bluegrass state (Maine) to Cape Cod - where bluegrass is an oddity. But I did manage to fall in with some wonderfully talented Irish players. Close enough.
One of the best singers/rhythm guitarists I ever had the pleasure to play with does this song. He grew up in Belfast during The Troubles. He has shared memories that are horrific. He does this song 4/4 with a rock beat - the melody is just as beautiful, the feel is less wistful, more regretful, and the song is no less powerful. When we play together I hang a baritone line on his vocal and use the banjo as a percussion instrument, playing almost nothing but ones and fives.
And that is the power of a fundamentally great song. "Star of the County Down" is a fundamentally great song. And you played it beautifully.
