The place where we set up our website, for UNDER a hundred fifty US, is wanting us to renew, same basic service for OVER $300.

Anybody feel like recommending THEIR favorite web host, if it's less expensive?

That's how they get new people: offer a very inexpensive price the first year and then go up every year thereafter. Nothing new about that.

For just a basic site? Are you using Wordpress? my hosting is pretty affordable.

I used Wix and I feel like the hosting was reasonable.

If you don't care _where_ your website is hosted, my host is $110 per year, and has only gone up 10% in a decade.

Thank you kindly.

This is one irritating part of getting older. I am able to remember prices I paid many years ago so when I go to replace that item many years later I get a 240 volt shock. My brand new 1971 Beetle was $2265. My return Greyhound ticket from Vancouver to Los Angeles was $56 in 1965. My first full time job [after my brief time at college] was $363 per month [before deductions]. Paying for airline tickets is bad enough now without them charging for a carry on the size of a lunch bucket.

What am I missing? What’s wrong with a free Facebook page, or YouTube channel?

Of interest: Round-triip air fare from Ithaca, NY to SFO in 1964 was about $300. With inflation that’s now over $3,000. I don’t think the airlines have kept up.

A LOT of people aren't on Facebook so you limit your reach.  And youtube is okay if you can suffer the commercials, but you can't do point of sale stuff if that's his goal.

I've always used GoDaddy to host our website (24 years now).  I forget how much we pay but I never thought it was unreasonable.  And their support is awesome (native English speaking ppl who aren't reading a script and looking stuff up while you wait).

For me to do business with anyone they must have a physical location and\or a legitimate website or an ebay, etsy, amazon or the like store with great feedback.

I feel the instagram only, facebook only etc business models are either stupid or could care less for those who dislike social media. Great companies do them all.

They require a lot of maintenance (i.e., new content pretty much daily), among other things.

Mike, it depends on what you're going to use the website FOR. If it's basic annoucements and occasional updates, there are inexpensive basic solutions like Wordpress (and others) out there. If you plan to do financial stuff over the site, like selling admission to shows, Wordpress can still do it - but it'll be a LOT more expensive. And understandably so.

Bill ..... I just flew round-trip from Greenville-Spartanburg (SC) to San Francisco last October for $360.  It was the $26 cheeseburger at the San Francisco Marriott that bothered me!

We use a Wordpress site and have done for over 15 years.  Since I hate adverts, we pay to exclude those, plus something extra for a better choice of fonts.  I think it's now about sixty bucks annually.

Wordpress has its problems.  They are always changing menus and functions, and then acting like it's your problem since you're not keeping up with their whimisical changes.  Like stupid Facebook and many other platforms, most of these constant changes and updates have nothing to do with security and everything to do with refining their ability mine data from your site—and from your visitors.

A friend set up a website for me and a small home business I had going at Weebly.com. I don't know if they're still doing what they were doing, but I was able to do everything I needed at the time and it didn't cost me a penny. I had to set up the pay window because he didn't want to know about any of my accounts or anything, but he did everything else. It ran for several years, and it was free.

I've hosted simple websites on Namecheap.com for years. Their plans range from $48.88 to $112.88 per year (as of today), and they offer around 50% off for the first year. The times I've needed help (installing an SSL certificate, for example), their customer service has been great.
