Was playing gone, gone, gone with a group the other day and was reminded how amazing of a song it was. I’m not super familiar with a lot of the old country/honky-tonk repertoire, and I’d like to change that-they’re such great songs.

With that in mind, I was wondering what you all thought are the best country/Honky Tonk songs done with/by a Bluegrass group? I’d like to go listen/learn. Figured I’d look into common ones done in bluegrass first, see what’s been done/how.

Suggestions for other good old country/Honky Tonk artist artist to check out or also appreciated.

Check out the album A Ride Through the Country by The Lost and Found. All the songs on the album are old Country classics recorded in Bluegrass style.

This is one I regularly call at jams. I'm not a very good singer, but I can pull this one off in A.

I'm partial to some of the honky-tonk songs recorded by the Stanley Brothers. "From the window up above," and "Could you love me one more time" for instance.

JD Crowe/New South's cover of George Jones's "(I'll be your) Stepping Stone," sung by the late Keith Whitley, is pretty danged good!

A lot of Buck Owens songs are great for bluegrass - Under Your Spell Again, Hello Trouble, Falling for You, Love's Gonna Live Here, and dozens more. The banjo can take the place of the telecaster.

Never heard it from a bluegrass band, but Jim Lauderdale’s “Where the Sidewalk Ends” is made for bluegrass.

Del has been doing "I'll Be There" (originally recorded by Webb Pierce) for years. It's a great two-chord song, but not easy to sing because of its wide vocal range.

Your cheatin‘ heart by Hank Williams.
I sing and play this often at jams and it it always apprechiated.
Everyone is smiling after his break. Resonates a lot with people.

Also a perfect song to practice singing while playing the banjo.

Best Country / Honky Tonk songs in Bluegrass! Is this not an oxymoron? Bluegrass is BLUEGRASS, Country is COUNTRY and Honky Tonk well what more can I say! Is Sousa Bach? Hell NO!

Often it is the mixing of different genres that brings the music forwards. We have Bluegrass today if Bill Monroe because he mixed traditional music from the British Isles (today often called Old-Time) with jazz and first generation of Country Music.

Although I never heard a banjo arrangement, or know who originally wrote or performed them "YOU WIN AGAIN" +
"WHAT MADE MILWAUKEE FAMOUS - MADE A FOOL OUT OF ME" (I first heard recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis) Is outstandingly HONKY-TONK, & makes me smile every time I hear them. ( No accounting for taste)
