Here is one of my favorite licks as of recently. I stole it from "Old Man at the Mill" but obviously it works well in lots of tunes with similar progressions.

Heres a teally kool Ralph Stanley extended "D " lick that he does during the second verse of Katey Daley. Its sort of in the backround during the singing, but it is perfect as a backround for the vocal. Its not hard, but its not quite as simple as it may sound. The tab starts at around 0:54 or so.
