I have a 2003 Granada that has the original Gibson mystery tone ring. I also have another banjo that has a gold plated Kluson tone ring. I’ve been contemplating switching them out. I would greatly appreciate any thoughts or advice.

Kluson tonering? Or do you mean Kulesh?

Yeah, never heard of a Kluson tone ring. Autocorrect, perhaps?

If I was curious, I would try it. You never know for sure until you do. Some rings love certain rims. The best banjos come about when the rim, ring, and neck get along and it is not always predictable.

I’m sorry, Kulesh.

I've had Gibsons with the Kulish and Crowe rings and I recently picked up a 3 with the mystery ring and I can tell you that I'm happy with the way it sounds.

Just remember there's no guarantee the swapped ring will fit properly on the other rim.

Saying that, I thought my Mystery ring Granadas had a more crisp tone than the Kulesh ones. I kinda liked them better overall.  One of the biggest dogs I've ever owned was a "Rich" era Kulesh Granada. You just never know.

P.S. Change the title of your post from Kluson to Kulesh so more people will know what you're talking about.

Funny, I had a 1991 Granada and no matter what I did to it, I couldn't get it to sound good. Away it went.

When I took it apart to check the ring fit, I saw that it had the AFP ring. The fit was good, but no matter what I tried, the banjo just didn't have it. It did look good though. cheeky
