Has anyone here used a Drum Dial to check head tension on a Heli-Mount configured Nechville banjo? If so, how consistent were the Drum Dial readings around the perimeter of the banjo head?

Maybe a call or PM to Turtle Hill Banjo, Danny Sullivan may be able to give some insight. Kb

Have you considered writing to Tom Nechville to ask what to expect?

Here's a "discussion" about that exact subject.

In between the back-and-forth bickering between a couple members, there is some relevant information.

Scot Yates,

Thanks for posting the link to the previous BHO discussion. I read through the complete discussion, and I believe that it provided a reasonable answer to my question.

In that discussion, Gregory Pickens provided a link to a video in which he demonstrated the use of a Drum Dial on a Nechville banjo. The Drum Dial readings were taken without a bridge in place, so there was no pressure applied to the head due to string tension. That is the method I prefer when using a Drum Dial for head tension adjustment.

In his demonstration, he got a reading of 91 near the neck and a reading as low as 87.5 near the tailpiece. In my judgement, that's a significant amount of variation. Based upon what I've seen of the Nechville Heli-Mount system, I'm not surprised that he got those results.
