He was asking about when this banjo was made as it only had a serial number and no Saga tag. 1976 was the first year GS banjos were made.

The first banjos had no saga tag.

I have owned four GS banjos including a G11W made in 1976 also. I have attached some pictures including its serial number.

Hmm…That looks more like a tubaphone than a Mastertone-style tone ring. Are my eyes deceiving me?

Bill, surely you have seen a Gibson style 40 hole arch top tone ring before haven't you? This is how they look inside the pot, but yes, they do resemble a tubaphone ring. Maybe it was even initially intentional given Vega's popularity in the late '20's.

That's how the early gs archtop rings look but yes totally looks like a tubaphone.
