Here is a wonderful free form Old Time banjo tune written by Jay Unger and arranged by Bill Huntley. I just added some chords to this beautiful piece and added some small changes....Jack Baker
Ashokan Farewell

Jay Ungar ran a violin camp above the Ashokan reservoir (note the spelling). This was the piece he played on the last evening, to say goodbye to the kids. It's especially poignant when you imagine hearing it whilst overlooking the eponymous reservoir.

Hi Fred,
Thanks for the spelling. I didn't want to correct Bill Huntley's spelling I guess. I've known Jay and Molly since 1970. Jay may have taught at my old Fretted Instruments School way back when. I remember when Jay wrote this. Great song and beautiful interpretation of what Jay saw and meant to express.....Jack

A very sweet arrangement in G, Jack, and your guitar chords sure finish it off well.
That has prompted me to take another look at my early version in D (double-C tuning with capo at the 2nd fret or tune up to aDADE). We play this tune in D at dances and others may wat to try it in D.
