Today I was given an old 1hp electric motor. Its cap start but works good with the cap wires joined. I am intending to use it to buff neck finishes. It rated at 1400 RPM. What size of buffing pads are recommended for polishing instrument finishes?

There are a variety of types of buffing pads. If you are only working on open-back banjos, the width of the surfaces being buffed is about 3 inches max. A typical arbor style buffing machine may not be necessary. Mine is a Shop Fox arbor W1681 with a 1/2 horsepower motor running around 600 rpm. Any good SOFT flannel buffing wheel small or large should spin on a one horsepower motor that is attached to a sturdy surface. Whether you need a buffing arbor, I cannot say.

Width as mentioned about three inches and diameter as big as you can twelve inch minimum.

Thanks for that Scott. I understand the need for wide when doing guitar bodies etc, I but am only doing banjo necks and rims. Could I use 8" wheels??

Hi Wayne,
I use professional buffers that are about 14 to16 inch and about three to four inches wide on all my banjos. I also do mostly resonator banjos and thats extremely important on big wide surfaces
Sure you could use that, bigger diameter gives you better smoother results, so use what ever you can. It will all work

Scott
