hello,
Regarding the tailpiece, where the 5th string tuner is attached. The 5th string turner which I have was purchased from Stewmac and has that fin...will this fit in the Sterner tailpiece?
Secondly, the banjo neck doesn't have the taper bore in it and so, for the 5th string attachment between the 4th and 5th fret, would a small wood screw be enough to hold the string?
thanks for replying,
BN
Thanks for this post; I didn't know about the Sterner-5th-tuner tailpiece at all.
I don't know if the fin will cause you problems, but I do know it's quite common to file it down for installing the tuner into wooden necks.
It seems that tailpiece is no longer available... I wonder if it violated the patent for the Fults tailpiece in the way it mounts to the hooks.
Anyway, I enjoyed reading about it (in banjo newsletter) and I look forward to hunting one down in the classifieds in future.

My mistake; it's still available, just not from Stewmac

...and looking more closely on the Sterner website, the mounting seems significantly different from the Fults patent I saw online some time ago (don't recall where)
whoops,
a couple days ago found out that BreezyRidge is in California...spoke to rep, whose name is Rog, I asked for the Sterner 5 String conversion instruction...he sent me text with attached instruction, then I asked him if he's got any Sterner 5 String conversion kits in stock and he said yes, I ordered one, about 75 bucks US funds + shipping,

Yes, the Fults was a highly engineered system with components that clamped the tailpiece to two hooks. I think the Sterner uses no additional hardware. One of the cleanest installations possible.
I used a Fults 34 tailpiece with XYZ mount for a while. My banjo sounded good and the tailpiece effectively compensated for a skewed neck. But I didn't think it was worth the weight or complexity, so I sold it.
