I've started playing 2-finger where 1st string drones are common but for double C/D that 1st string is sus2 which is normally not a suitable drone. I'm asking 2-finger players, do you use the 2nd string for a drone of not use that drone if a chord shape is inconvenient with the melody? Or play in Open G?

What about triple-C? gCGCC

Though I don't play it any more, I still love hearing the 1st string drones in 3-finger open G.

If i have to be in double C/D I prefer to fret the first string. But besides gCGCC ("dulcimer tuning") also open C tuning gCGCE is possible.

Mostly sound the 1st but not always. Depends if it sounds right with the melody.

In Double C, when playing thumb lead 2F, I will drone on the open second string quite often, but I use the first string as well. Just depends on what sounds best to me.

Open C is great for thumb lead. Crank that first string up to E

Great question, by the way.
