I’m not sure where else to put this, it’s banjo adjacent! I’ve started making basic straps, what’s the ideal thickness of leather for a 2-3” strap for a master tone banjo using Chicago screws. My latest is 3mm thick buffalo about 2.5” wide.

Don't know
(Always an acceptable answer if true)
Are you asking about MINIMUM thickness for strength to hold up that many pounds, or MAXIMUM thickness to fit under the J hooks?

Anyway, best wishes for artistic and commercial success.

Thanks Mike,

I think yes to both questions / suggestions. 1.5mm is too thin for a strap to hold up properly, it will crease and buckle. 3.5-4 seems too think at least for the end sections. I am not doing this commercially but have a few leather tools and have realised that leather strips are quite cheap if one is happy to shape and cut it.
