We usually set up a little video camera out in front for our shows, to get content for YouTube, etc. However, the sound quality is not the greatest, which is understandable. Is there a way to record the sound right off the soundboard as you are taking a video? Maybe there are cameras that can be plugged in directly? Any advice and education that can be shared is welcome. Thanks.
Every sound board will have some type of line out. Probably multiple lines out -- such as monitor sends, auxiliary sends, and most likely even tape (or record) out. This last might even be RCA plugs.
Jus find a line out from your board and send that signal through the appropriate cable to the input of an external recorder.
Then use video editing software on your computer to swap out the camera audio for the external audio. That's exactly what I did on my two and only solo banjo videos. Video was shot with a Canon DSLR. Audio was recorded through an AT2020 condenser into a Fostex recorder.
If your video camera has an audio input for external mic or line in, you could take the line out from the board into that. Might need a long cord that might not be convenient.
You could also set up a good quality mic in front a PA speaker and record from that into an external recorder.
And, finally, you could buy a new video recorder that does a better job with sound. I just did. I'm expecting delivery tomorrow of a Zoom Q2n-4K ("The 4K camera for musicians"). I've watched lots of video reviews online and the sound is impressive. Currently selling for $180 new (though some sellers have it for less). Amazon has "renewed" for $162. eBay has lots of used ones in good shape for closer to $100. That's what I bought. I've had good luck with used or refurbished electronics. But if you prefer to buy new, the price is affordable.
I use the zoom h6 to record the audio and the camera for the video and after I edit it on the computer…
